tomorrow published in the herald sun
smoking is bad - we all know that.
but the rate about young smokers in the age between 12 and 14 is in australia increasing.
all schools have a smoking ban (since the 30th of july victoria is under a whole smoking ban. smoking is not allowed in pubs, restaurants, public places, etc.).
but the young people are still smoking. and because there is ban at schools, they are smoke on the trainstations. some young students get interviewed. they said, they need a cigarette to start the day.
the herald sun took photos from them. saw kids, sitting at the trainstadion, mostly in schooluniforms, smoking.
but should the pictures get published? because it is very probably, that the students get banned from the schools, when they are in the herald sun - smoking and in school uniform.
this was the issue in the conference today.
to published means to set the young students under the risk to loose theire schoolplace. and a lot a family members would call the herald sun and complain about it very angry.
on the other side, it´s legal. and they doing defenitly something wrong. the photographer talked with them before (well, with the most of them), they know, that someone did photos from them.
while they were discussing about it, i was thinking, how it would be in germany. first of all we have no school uniforms, so they wouldn´t know, on which school they are. and if - it doesn´t matter, i guess.
but basically you´re sitting between to chairs: protecting young kids (because they don´t know what they doing) or show the truth (but you can show it in very different ways).
herald sun decided to publish it. but they will use the pics, where you cannot see the emblems from the uniforms.
well, i don´t agree. pictures yes. but not a picture where you can indentify the person (take the photo in front of the sun, or show only the back from the person, or you can take a picture, where the swap cigarettes and you only can see the fingers...). basicly you need a photo. a photo where you can see two things: young people and they smoke. it makes the article authentic (like: yes, it´s true, you can see it with your own eyes). but you don´t need the faces for that.
and here is line. and on the other side is the herald sun. they doing it (like die bild in germany). of course they were talking about it, if it would be a risk for the kids, but they never thought not to show the faces. they need that. you are getting more attention with that. in my opinion it´s not attention, it´s voyerism, which the public wants to get served. and that is not serious and objective journalism.
will see if they are really publishing it tomorrow. and i am interested what response they will get.

homesick
i am working me a little bit to death, i guess. every friday working from 9am till 12am next day (9am-5.30pm herald sun, 6pm-12am hofbrauhaus). in the first break i had a appointment with sbs (start 22.august), signed the contract. in the second break i talked with my neighbour peter (we are developing a new media instrument, we will show it at the artcenter in october, will write about that later).
i don't want to complain. will only show the reason, why i am so slow with answering emails - i am sorry. i love you all, and i am missing you. to be honest, last week was the first time when i felt homesick. i was reading the blog from julia, her story about the diploma works from our university (they are sooooo f***ing great).
i am missing the nights with the talks about art, live and the sexual problems the gumbears :o)
BUT, no worries, darlings. i learned from my mistakes in the past, i should get more time for me and art. on the weekend is the writers festival starting *yay* will go there and will have a day off from the hofbrauhaus.
well, and i should write a little bit about my work at herald sun.
i am impressed. the newsdesk, where i am actually working looks like a hollywood newspapers-set. a huge room on the 12th level in the herald sun building. in the middle is a circle, there are sitting the bosses and cordinators and designers, over our heads are 14 tvs, showing australian and international channels. the conference is every day at 10.30am and 4pm. very funny, the same humor, the same black ironic atmosphere like the confrences in germany. we are all the same... journalists are crazy (yyyyeeeeaahhaaaa - i feel like at home). last friday one of them started to scream through the whole office. complainted about a photo. the other intern was really scared, i was laughing... i know that - men... sometimes we all have to steam up...
after the second conference the office is becoming busy. the atmosphere is changing. like a beehive. the people walking faster around, the noice is becoming louder. herald sun is like the bild in germany, but bigger (stellt euch das mal vor). the mostly part of the herald sun is from a serious journalistic and a normal minded person views's grab. like all newspapers in this section is the sportspart huge, art is "lifstyle", politic is a personal opinion from the writers and economy is the bets for horse runs (well, a little bit overdrawn, but true).
but the journalists are good eduacated, with a lot of experience and passion. i liked that, and i am appreciating that. and they all believing that they doing right - because they have sucess (herald sun is the newspaper of the year 2005 and 2006, most selling and biggest newspaper in australia). so who you should blame? the journalists, who writing opinion, mixed with scandals, intimitate facts and emotions? or the readers, who are buying and financeing this way of journalism? it's always the old question: who is the chick and who is the egg?
shane burke, the associate editor (my first contact, who i anoid for months, till i got the first answer for my emails) is impressed about my education - and about me, as well - i hope. no, i am sure. he told me that. normally i am shy in a new enviroment, but here - no. because why? i am at home now (well not 100% because the herald sun is not objectiv)!
that is that, why i am living, why i am in this world. i cannot do anything else, never. friends (oh no, here you naming your friends "mates") - MATES, maybe, hopefuly you can understand me better - i am on a egotrip now, i know. i am hurting persons with that, i know. i am sorry for that, but i cannot change. jetzt nicht mehr.
